One of the very biggest inspirations I have in Europe in particular the in the United Kingdom is Tweed. Tweed has been woven in the United Kingdom for many years. The British have turned making Tweed into an art form of it’s own. It’s artistic in several ways, by shape, texture and color. Just some historical data Tweed was used for country wear in it’s beginnings. In the 1890’s tweed became popular for tailor made outfits, which usually consisted of a jacket and a long skirt. Which was helpful during the time when Women joined the workforce.

Coco Chanel made an impact on Fashion. In particular adapting Menswear and giving it a feminine edge. In the 1950’s and 1960’s Chanel turned Tweed into something that was high fashion. ” The Chanel suit became a status symbol for a new generation, made of solid or tweed fabric, with its slim skirt and collarless jacket trimmed in braid, gold buttons, patch pockets, and—sewn into the hem—a gold-colored chain ensuring it hung properly from the shoulders. Chanel also reintroduced her handbags, jewelry, and shoes with great success in subsequent seasons.” (1) I have personally always admired Chanel and the way she changed the culture of fashion. She did something that will forever be remembered. I admire her gutsy way of making a change to the norm. Anyone who can do that has my respect.

I love Tweed for many reasons. That is because of the versatility of the textile. It can be worn all year long. Depending on the thickness of the weave. I also like the shapes that it can be weaved into. There is also a variety of colors. I have seen many, many different types of weaves. Some of my favorites have intricate shapes in the patten of weave. So maybe one day when I have a bunch of money, I’ll be able to afford a designer Tweed suit.
