Alexandre Herchcovitch is an innovator of fashion.  The Brazilian born fashion marvel has a great way of setting himself apart from other designers.  He is educated and has graduated from art and fashion schools.  ” He got his first media break when an S&M outfit he made for a drag queen made São Paolo news.” In 1994 he launched his collection during the Rio Fashion Week.  After that both in London and Paris.  In 2004 he chose to show during New York’s Fashion Week.  His style of fashion has been described as “Colorful cool wrapped in impeccable tailoring. Those afraid of pattern and print should not apply.”

Here are some examples of the collection for Spring/Summer 2009 collection.  The collection can be described in several ways.  The color pallet is varied throughout the collection, soft pastels, ivories, prints, neutrals and whites.  The look of the garments are very structured.  Some of the garments look military style.  Others are ruffled and flow away from the body.  There is also a mish mash of structure in the garments. There are also surface effects to some of the garments, mostly with sequins.  The use of buttons and pockets are also prominent in the garments.

Alexandre Herchcovitch also has made many business connections by expanding on his branding.  He has partnered with many companies with a wide range of ideas.  Some examples of the partnerships he has made are, Dryzun (jewlery design), Sugar shoes (sneakers), Tok&Stok (decor), Melisa (plastic shoes), Motorola (cell decor), Olympikus (Olympic Uniforms), San Rio (T-shirts), Walt Disney (T-Shirts), McDonalds (Uniforms), and Band-Aid (printed band-aids).  He has diversified himself and that makes for a great designer.  He seems to be able to reach different markets but stay true to his design aesthetic.

There are many reasons why I was drawn to this designer.  I found an article on his designer Band-Aids and I was instantly fascinated.  So I decided to look the guy up and found his website. The website. I converted it to English because I don’t speak Portuguese ( I gave you the English version).  The website has a wealth of information available.  I enjoyed reading the open letter section of the website.  It gives you a better look at his character and what his inspirations truly are.  A question that was asked  about his greatest statement as  a creator.  He responded, To propose that people communicate through my creations.”  I think that is a really bold statement, for a really bold brand.

  1. Slightly off topic perhaps, but a request for you to consider the ethics of buying items like designer clothes. Please try and consider, for example, the things your product is manufactured with, the conditions of the employees where they’re made and the green credentials of retailers. And endeavour to recycle rather than discarding. Thanks!!!!
